So Many People

image

I was just out at the shops when I realised… I’ve never seen any of these people here before; I saw at least 100 different people and I’d never seen one of them before, except maybe the cashiers at my regular grocery store.

We go out every day and see hundreds of new people, most of which we have never seen before in our lives, or at least not noticed before. If you think about it, every time you go out you probably see at least 100 different people. Multiply that by several times a day, several days a week, etc. etc… That’s a shit load of people.

It’s somewhat comforting knowing that there are so many different people out there that like so many different things and have so many unique tastes and styles… at least one of them has to like something I create, and if we’re lucky then there will be more than one.

But I guess that’s the essence of marketing - getting as many people as possible to see what you do knowing that not all of them will like it, but some of them will and the more people you get to see it, the more people you will get that like it.

Fairly obvious, I know, but worth noting nonetheless. Have a great day.

Happy 2014! (Free Downloads!)

What better way to roll in the New Year than with a bunch of new stuff - I’ve been busy these holidays working on a bunch of things, from a website to an EP and lots in between. Here are some links to all of it, if you’re interested:

http://elphnt.co.za/ - my new homepage on the internet.

https://www.facebook.com/elphntx - my revamped Facebook page.

https://elphnt.bandcamp.com/ - my new Bandcamp page where you’ll find a fancy new EP for FREE DOWNLOAD.

Enjoy, and all the best for 2014.

I’ve uploaded 2 new pieces to my Soundcloud.

I rediscovered some old recordings I had done to and from tape and I thought the tape sounded so great I had to do something with them.

Dimensions III (redux) is a quick cut I did of one of the samples, I might explore what I can do with it a bit more at some stage.

Dimensions III.2 is literally as is from tape, no edits. It’s a bit jarring, but the tape sound is beautiful.

Electric Love

Here is the first in a series of mix-mp3s I’ll be putting together as time goes by documenting the music that I listen to and some of my influences.

The purpose of the mixes is twofold; to show off some of the music that has influenced me and the way I make music and at the same time expose listeners to some really fantastic music they may not have heard.

The compilations will be themed and I’ll be doing cover art for them too.

This one is called ‘Now That’s What I Call Psychedelic Music, Vol. 1’ and features a line-up of some great (albeit somewhat obvious) Psychedelic Music (Rock mostly). The album art is a reference to the Country Joe & The Fish album cover for Psychedelic Music for the Mind & Body (really cool album - check it out).

The tracklist is mostly populated by Hendrix tunes (he’s one of my biggest influences) but there are a few other great tracks in here. Hopefully there will be another Psychedelic Music mix on the way with some less obvious tracks, but for now enjoy some of my favourite Psychedelic Music. Turn on, tune in and drop out.

GENERATIVE SERIES: GENERATIVE 1

Inspired by the work of Brian Eno and encouraged by one of my other projects, Original Swimming Party, I decided to explore the abilities of Ableton Live to make generative music.

I wanted to setup a song that would mostly play itself; I put in a bunch of sample material and added a few elements of human control so that I could guide the piece along it’s way and hit play. I tweaked a few parameters as it went but most of the piece was generated out of processes.

THE GENERATIVE SERIES
This is the first in a series of generative pieces I hope to do exploring the possibilities of Live as a generative sound machine. The ultimate goal is to create several pieces that will be interactive and setup an exhibition allowing listeners to hear the piece being generated but give them access to several controls to affect the course of the generation.

I am currently working on Generative 2.

I designed some sounds the other day for use in my own work but you can have them for free if you want. They’re all just Ableton preset files using the Analog synthesizer so you’ll need to have the Suite version of Live to use them.
I was just trying to get some basic ‘analogue’ sounding waves so there are 5 presets: Analog Sine, Analog Square, Analog Saw, Analog Pulse 50% and Analog Pulse 25%. Enjoy!
